Should someone like me even have
a dog? The point is moot. I have him
and he owes Ne back rent. He is
going nowhere.
Back to the story: So, I’m smugly
enjoying our little game of fetch —
which usually lasts about five tosses
before one of us gets bored and goes
for a beer.
Without even trying to fool him,
I accidentally toss the toy one way
while he is looking the other — and
now the age-old game of “Where is
it?” begins.
The dog scurries this way and
that, somehow unable to see the
brightly colored toy resting on the
green lawn as he passes within five
feet of it.
“Is he messing with me?”
I wonder.
I point at the toy.
He looks at me hopefully.
I enthusiastically say, “There it
is!” while grandly sweeping my arm
so that the extended finger points
right at the toy.
He goes the other way.
“No, no, here it is!” And I offer
another exaggerated point.
